The Prime Minister’s private study was a masterclass in intimidation. Dark mahogany. Aged leather. Imported clove. In the corner, a grandfather clock kept a heavy, unhurried count.
Rose stood in front of the desk and did not move. Charcoal wool trench, belted. First Secretary of the State Department. Face empty on purpose.
She took a thin manila folder from the briefcase — red CIA stamp — and set it on the polish hard enough to make the sound count.
“Vannakhai rebels. They are inside Crown Prince Arin’s detail for the state visit tomorrow. The window is the motorcade.”
Thanak did not reach for the folder. He lifted the crystal tumbler, tasted the scotch, and looked at her over it.
“Your apparatus is efficient, Madame Caldwell. You are also late. I have known about the plot for three weeks.”
The board in her head rearranged without asking her permission. He had not missed it. He had left the door off the latch.
“You are letting them kill him.” Not a question. “Arin dies. You blame Vannakhai. The army rallies. You step in as Regent to comfort the nation you orphaned.”
“I am letting nature take its course.” Glass down. “The boy is weak. Easily moved — as you know, given the hour you keep with him. Soraphan needs a leader. Not a puppet on an American string.”
She came around far enough to put her eyes level with his. “If that boy dies, Washington will not file a tragedy. They will file a failure of the government that was standing there when it happened. I will have State mark this harbor negligent for terrorism.”
The amusement on his mouth slipped by a degree.
“IMF frozen. Corridors sanctioned. The capital you use to feed the army gone in a night. You will not be Regent of a kingdom, Thanak. You will be mayor of a rock that cannot borrow.”
Silence stretched until it had a temperature. The polite mask went. What was under it had been cornered in the wallet, which was the only place he could still be hurt.
“You Americans," Thanak hissed softly, leaning back in his chair. “Air-conditioned offices. Expensive wool. You move our lives on a board and talk about ruin as if you had ever starved. You know nothing of this country’s pain.”
He stood, passed her, opened the dressing room, and came back with a crumpled fist of black fabric that landed on the folder.
“I will guarantee the Prince arrives. But I require a concession. A demonstration of your… commitment.”
He was already at the oak doors. “Put these on. Leave your clothes here. I will be in the car. It is time I showed you the real Soraphan.”
The latch fell.
She was alone with the clock.
The fabric was cheap synthetic lace, a nightie that opened down the front and held with one thin ribbon between the breasts. Under it, a string that barely deserved the name. Scratch. Cheap chemical dye.
Rose stared at her reflection in the dark glass of the study window. She understood the tax. He did not need her body for the hour. He needed the First Secretary dressed like a parlor girl who could be priced. Degradation as policy.
She did the math anyway. Private humiliation in a car, a room, an hour she could put in a box. Against a kingdom. Against the asset she had built in a mirror. Against her hands on the wheel in the morning.
I can survive him.
Rose unbelted her charcoal trench coat. Silk blouse. Skirt. The last of the diplomatic cut left on the leather chair. She stepped into the lace. It dragged. The hemline was obscenely short, barely grazing the bottom curve of her ass cheeks. She picked up her trench coat and pulled it tightly around her, belting it at her waist. From the outside, she looked exactly as she had ten minutes ago, but beneath the diplomat’s exterior, the friction of the wool against her naked legs was a constant reminder of her stripped body.
She closed her eyes, took one slow, measured breath, locking her fear in a dark box at the back of her mind. Then, she pushed the door open, stepping out into the corridor, and went to face Thanak.
✦
The armored Mercedes eased to a halt at a crowded, dimly lit intersection. The opulent high-rises of the diplomatic sector had gradually given way to crumbling concrete, tangled power lines, and the flickering, sickly glow of neon signs. The air outside looked thick, hazy with the exhaust of cheap scooters. Women in bright, cheap spandex loitered under the flickering streetlamps. Rose sat in the back with her coat sealed. Ready for whatever the dark of the car was going to cost.
But Thanak did not reach for her. He did not look at her.
“The watch on your wrist,” he said, eyes on the corner, “would take one of those women three years. They sell their bodies on the asphalt for two hundred dollars a night.”
Then he did look. The same serpentine amusement he had worn over the scotch.
“Get out.”
She waited for the rest of the sentence. There was no rest.
"Let us see what the American diplomat is worth on the open market." Thanak reached forward and pressed a button. The locks on Rose’s door clicked open. "Bring me two hundred dollars earned from this street tonight, Madame Caldwell, and the Prince lives. Fail, and I will let the Vannakhai bullets fly tomorrow."
Rose froze. The geopolitical chessboard in her mind flipped over.
He didn't want a private show. He wasn't going to touch her. He was throwing her to the wolves.
For the first time all evening, the mask of the untouchable diplomat cracked. A cold, suffocating wave of genuine terror seized her lungs.
"You are out of your mind," Rose whispered, the words slipping out before she could stop them. "If I step out of this car, I could be recognized. The international fallout—"
"No one on this street watches the diplomatic press briefings, Madame Caldwell," Thanak interrupted, his eyes dead and unyielding. "To them, you are not a First Secretary. You are simply fresh meat."
"Leave the coat," Thanak purred, his voice venomous. "The rules of the street dictate you advertise your wares. Get out."
Rose didn't move. Her hands remained rigidly clamped around the lapels of the heavy wool. The trench coat was her final piece of armor, the absolute last barrier between her dignity and total ruin. To take it off wasn't just to comply; it was to willingly strip herself bare for the slaughter.
Thanak slowly checked his watch. "The Vannakhai assassins are finalizing their routes."
Rose closed her eyes. Her jaw locked so tight her teeth ached. Slowly, her fingers trembling, she unbelted the trench coat. Every instinct in her body screamed in protest as she slipped it off her shoulders, leaving it on the leather seat.
The sudden absence of the heavy fabric made her feel terrifyingly weightless. She reached for the chrome handle, pushed the door open, and stepped out into the night. She was wearing nothing but the sheer, synthetic nightie, the tiny string thong, and her stiletto heels.
The moment her heels hit the damp, cracked asphalt, the physical reality of the slums struck her like a physical blow. The evening air was biting, carrying the sharp, nauseating scent of rotting garbage, cheap frying oil, and stale beer. A cold gust of wind swept down the alleyway, hitting her bare legs and the exposed, pale skin of her stomach.
Rose shivered. Goosebumps erupted along her thighs, and her nipples hardened, pressing starkly against the thin, unlined lace. The front of the nightie fluttered in the breeze, threatening to pull open the single, fragile ribbon tied between her breasts.
Behind her the Mercedes took the light and was gone.
The panic rose. She put a lid on it and walked to the lamp.
Three women were already there. As Rose approached, they stopped talking, their eyes snapping to her. They took in her immaculate hair, the expensive, clear skin of a woman who had never worked a day in the sun, and the shockingly sheer, almost completely open lingerie.
She squared her shoulders and read the corner the way she read a market. She was, without mercy, the most expensive thing standing on it.
This will be fast, she calculated. A wealthy businessman cutting through the district. A quick flash of the ribbon for a private viewing. Two hundred dollars, and I walk away.
Forty-five minutes later, the devastating reality of her environment finally set in.
Her legs were shaking, her feet aching in the high heels. Sweaty laborers and drunken locals stumbled past. They all stared at her—their eyes wide, hungry, and entirely fixated on her bare skin. But when they approached the corner, they didn't walk toward her. They walked right past her to the women in the spandex.
The humiliation arrived with its correct name. They were not refusing her. They could not afford the idea of her. A luxury good set down in a famine. On this street a woman who looked like her cost a number none of them were carrying.
Nearly an hour. Half-naked. Shivering. Not one dollar.
A loud, guttural roar shattered the ambient noise. A beaten Honda drifted the corner, tires wet, and stopped in front of her.
The window came down. Early sixties. Hair bleached brassy yellow and forced into a mohawk. He leaned out and inventoried her.
“Who do you work for?” he barked, his voice loud enough to turn heads on the sidewalk, revealing a missing front tooth. “This corner is Red Dragon. You need permission tonight, sweetheart.”
Rose froze. She wasn't dealing with a customer; she was dealing with a local thug.
“I don’t work for anyone. I am independent.”
The man—Ah Long—squinted at her. He took in her proud posture and the clearly posh and affluent hair and makeup, a stark contrast to the cheap cut of her lingerie. His aggressive stance dropped, replaced by a greasy calculation.
“A freelancer.” He tipped his chin at the empty air around her. “You can’t eat here. Look at them. You think they have the cash for a premium ride? You’re starving on this curb.”
Her jaw set. He was not wrong.
"Come to my club," Ah Long offered, popping the lock on the passenger side door. "It's two blocks down. My customers actually have money in their pockets. You'll make what you're worth." Rose stared at the open door. The interior smelled of stale smoke and cheap cologne. Getting into a stranger's car in the slums was a violation of every personal security protocol the State Department had ever taught her. But standing on this corner equalled zero dollars. Zero dollars meant losing the Crown Prince.
She stepped off the curb and into the car.
✦
The club hit like a wall. Bass in the chest. Cheap tobacco, spilled beer, unwashed heat. Above her, erratic strobe lights sliced through the darkness. The floor beneath her stilettos was horrifyingly sticky.
Ah Long led her past the bar, gesturing toward a small, raised stage in the center of the room. A rusted brass pole extended from floor to ceiling, the metal visibly smeared with fingerprints.
"Go dance," Ah Long yelled over the pounding bass. "The men throw money when you shake it."
She looked at the pole and crossed her arms over the open front of the nightie. “No. I am not going up there.”
Ah Long stopped walking. He turned around, looking her up and down with a slow, exaggerated sigh. The greasy smile vanished, replaced by the hard, flat stare of a businessman dealing with a difficult commodity.
"Think you're a princess, huh?" he mocked, his voice dropping below the pounding bass of the music. "Too good for the lights? Listen to me, sweetheart. I don't run a charity. You don't want to make fast money on my stage? Fine. You can make slow money in the mud with the pigs."
He pointed to a plastic tray piled high with empty, foam-crusted beer cups on a nearby table.
"Walk the floor. Pour the pitchers, clear the empties. These men will tip you. But you have to work them. Be sweet. Laugh at their terrible jokes. Make them feel like kings, or you walk out of here with nothing."
Rose stared at the sticky plastic tray. The sheer drop in status was dizzying. Waitressing, she thought, swallowing her pride. Waitressing in a filthy Triad club. For one-dollar tips. She looked at the leering men in the booths. She thought of Arin’s motorcade.
She uncrossed her arms. "Give me a pitcher."
Two hours. She walked the sticky floor, her calves burning from the stilettos, the biting air-conditioning raising goosebumps on her exposed cheeks. She learned the brutal economics of the floor quickly. She dodged the grasping hands of the men who didn't hold cash, twisting her hips out of reach with a practiced, apologetic smile. But when a "generous" customer slapped a five-dollar bill on the table, she forced herself to linger. She allowed calloused, dirty fingers to drag over the bare curve of her thigh, or steal a quick squeeze of her ass as she walked away.
By the end of the second hour, she was entirely exhausted, but her fist was wrapped tightly around a thick, crumpled stack of bills.
A nervous tap on her shoulder broke her concentration. Standing behind her was a skinny young man with thick, smudged glasses. His eyes darting from her face down to the sheer lace barely covering her hips.
He leaned in, his breath smelling of stale peanuts. "Fifty dollars," he stammered, pulling a single, crisp bill from his pocket. "For a... for a private show."
She looked at the velvet curtain at the side of the hall. Then at the bill. The math was ugly and simple. Fifty dollars. One final transaction, and this waking nightmare would be over.
There were no private VIP rooms. He led her to a small, dingy alcove near the bathrooms, concealed only by a set of heavy, dust-stained velvet curtains. He pulled the thick fabric shut behind them, sealing them in a claustrophobic, dimly lit space that smelled of mold and urinal cakes.
“What do you want to see.”
The man adjusted his glasses, his face flushing red. "You know," he mumbled, his hands dropping to his belt.
Rose’s jaw locked. One last push. "Fine. But no touching. If you touch me, I walk out."
He nodded frantically.
Behind the curtain the bass became a muffled animal. She turned her back to him because looking at him would have made the next minute harder to spend. Reaching behind her, her fingers found the string of her thong. She drew the fabric aside and held, completely exposing her most private self.
For five slow minutes, the only sounds were the muffled bass of the club music and the frantic, heavy panting of the man behind her. Rose did not look over her shoulder. She didn't need to. She knew exactly what he was doing, the frantic friction of his hand echoing in the small space. She kept her posture, counting the seconds in her head.
Suddenly, the man let out a sharp, choked gasp.
A split-second later, Rose flinched. A few heavy, searingly hot drops of his release hit the skin of her right calf.
The gutting reality of the fluid made her stomach heave, but a massive wave of relief quickly washed over it. It was over. She let the string of her thong snap back into place, turned around, and snatched the fifty-dollar bill from the shaking hand.
She didn't wait. Rose shoved the heavy velvet curtains open, stepping out into the hallway.
As the curtains parted, she looked up.
Directly across the club, standing behind the main bar, was Ah Long. He was wiping down a glass with a dirty rag, but his eyes were locked dead onto hers. He wasn't smiling. He was just watching her, his gaze heavy with absolute, degrading comprehension.
He knew exactly what she had just done behind that curtain. He knew what she was covered in.
A sudden, crushing surge of shame hit Rose with the force of a tidal wave. For two hours, she had successfully convinced herself that she was a mastermind executing a brilliant, undercover transaction. She had kept her ego intact.
But seeing the look in the pimp's eyes shattered the illusion entirely. To him, she wasn't a powerful diplomat playing a dangerous game. She was just another desperate girl willing to pull her panties aside for fifty bucks in a dirty hallway.
The humiliation burned. Averting her eyes, Rose clutched the stack of crumpled bills to her chest and practically fled toward the dark, empty storage room at the back of the club to finally count her salvation.
✦
The storage room was a sensory nightmare. It smelled violently of industrial bleach, damp cardboard, and decades of spilled beer. The single overhead bulb flickered, casting a sickly yellow pall over the towering stacks of liquor crates.
She stood on the concrete and flattened the crumpled bills.
Fifty-five. Fifty-six. Fifty-seven.
She stared at the stack of cash. Devastated. Fifty-seven dollars. Combined with the fifty from the private show, she was sitting at exactly one hundred and seven dollars. She was barely halfway there.
The metal door groaned.
Ah Long in the frame, cigarette hanging. He looked at the pile and the missing tooth did the smiling.
"Why the sad face, gorgeous?" Ah Long asked. "I saw you on the floor. The customers love you. You're making money."
She did not answer.
He dropped the cigarette and killed it under the boot. "You want to make the real money, you have to stop playing waitress. I’ll give you a hundred dollars. Right now. For a half-hour of full service. It’s a premium rate, sweetheart. The street girls only charge twenty."
"No," Rose said. The breathy, accommodating tone she had used on the club floor evaporated instantly. Her voice was the sharp, flat cadence of a State Department negotiator. "I am not giving you a half-hour. I will give you ten minutes. I will untie the ribbon. A private viewing, and hand service only. For the same hundred."
Ah Long stared at her for a long second. Then, he laughed. It was a harsh, scraping sound that echoed off the concrete.
"A hundred dollars for a handjob and a peek?" he scoffed, shaking his head in disbelief. He reached into his pocket, pulled out the crisp hundred-dollar bill, and held it up between two fingers. "Sweetheart, look around you. I can get three girls off the street to do that for twenty bucks. You aren't in the big city anymore. You don't set the prices in my club."
He began to fold the bill, making a show of putting it back into his pocket. "You want this hundred? You earn it. You drop to your knees and use your mouth. Or you can keep working those thirsty men in the club for tips, a dollar bill at a time."
Rose’s heart slammed against her ribs. He was walking away. The negotiation tactic had failed entirely. Her premium status meant absolutely nothing here.
"Wait," Rose said. The word tasted like battery acid.
Ah Long stopped. He looked back at her, his eyes gleaming with total, predatory victory. He knew he had cornered her.
"Fine," Rose forced the word out. Her voice lost its sharp edge, crumbling into a hollow, desperate compromise. "Ten minutes. On my knees. I... I need the money tonight."
Ah Long tapped the folded bill against his chin, pretending to consider it while he let her stew in her own humiliation. Finally, his missing front tooth appeared in a greasy smirk.
"Ten minutes," he agreed slowly. "But if we're doing it my way... we do it on my terms. Down."
Rose didn't hesitate. She simply did the math. $107 plus $100 equals Arin’s survival. She dropped to her knees.
Ah Long stepped forward, the toes of his heavy boots stopping inches from her kneecaps. He unzipped his denim jeans. The heavy, metallic rasp of the zipper sounded incredibly loud in the small room.
As he exposed himself, a harsh, stale wave of sweat and cheap tobacco hit her face. Rose detached entirely. Her mind vaulted out of the filthy storage room and soared back to the geopolitical chessboard.
She leaned forward and took him into her mouth.
It was quickly apparent that Ah Long was a seasoned predator who had purchased this exact service a thousand times, and he intended to extract every single cent. His hands clamped down heavily on the top of her head, his fingers tangling brutally into her immaculate hair. He forced the rhythm, pulling her head forward to meet the aggressive, upward thrust of his hips.
He was thick, forcing her jaw to stretch. He battered past her lips, driving deep against the back of her throat.
“Tongue, sweetheart. Work for it.”
Rose squeezed her eyes shut and swirled her tongue desperately around his swollen head, working the underside with her soft lips, willing him to finish faster. The seconds dragged into minutes. Her neck ached from the angle, her knees bruising against the unforgiving concrete. He was deliberately prolonging it, asserting his absolute dominance over the beautiful, blonde woman kneeling at his feet.
This is not the end, she told herself. This is the price of the crown. She pictured Arin sitting on the throne of Soraphan. She pictured the exact, apocalyptic strategy she would use to dismantle Thanak's entire life.
Ah Long’s breathing finally shifted. The heavy, measured grunts turned jagged and desperate. His hands tightened in her hair, pulling her head down hard as his hips locked.
Rose braced herself for the finish, ready to swallow her pride and end the nightmare.
He did not let her.
At the very last second, he yanked her head back by the roots of her hair. He pulled his hips away from her face, exposing her to the cold air.
A heavy, searingly hot splatter hit the side of her cheek. A second pulse lashed across her closed eyelids, and a third landed thick and heavy on her bottom lip, slowly dripping down her chin.
The mess on her skin had a weight that wanted her sick.
Eyes shut. She didn't wipe her face. She didn't move.
Ah Long let out a long, satisfied exhale. He released her hair, zipped his jeans, and reached into his pocket. A crisp, hundred-dollar bill fluttered down, landing on the sticky floor right beside her bruised knee.
Rose opened her eyes. Two hundred and seven. The transaction, as far as the room knew, was done.
✦
High above the slums, in the cooled sanctuary of the diplomatic sector, Thanak sat in the study Rose had left her clothes in.
Lamp. Scotch. Clove. On the desk, a laptop threw a black-and-white feed from a camera no one in the storage room had been meant to see.
He watched the First Secretary who had threatened to bankrupt him a few hours ago on her knees on filthy concrete. He watched the pimp finish across the face she used on ministers.
Spacebar. The frame froze.
He saved the still: Rose Caldwell, the blonde beauty, bruised, half-naked, marked by a peasant.
Thanak took a slow, deeply satisfied sip of his scotch, the ice clinking softly against the crystal.
Beneath the heavy mahogany desk, hidden in the shadows, one of his mistresses was on her knees between his legs. Her head bobbed in a slow, rhythmic, highly practiced motion, her soft hands resting lightly on his thighs.
Thanak closed his eyes, letting the dual sensations of absolute political victory and physical pleasure wash over him. He had won. He had taken the American shark, stripped her of her teeth, and thrown her into the gutter.
